Search Engine Optimization, a vital component in website building success, often leaves beginners quaking in their boots. What is it, exactly?

Google Search

SEO are the actions and steps taken by website builders in order to make their website appear more relevant to search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo. A search engine’s goal is to return the most relevant and helpful returns to searches their users make. This means that they have to rank the websites by order of how relevant they are, which is where SEO comes in. Those that carry out SEO must adhere to the preferences Google, Bing and Yahoo have, maximizing their ranking in each ‘category’ and therefore their overall ranking. The better they rank, the higher they appear for searches related to their website, leading to more visits and conversions.

It is one of the most important aspects of website management, so we thought it was worth giving you a few top tips! Here are 4 which even beginners can begin to optimize -

  • Get your website on the search engines! Contrary to popular belief, websites are not automatically listed on search engines, you have to submit them yourself. To get your site listed, you will need a sitemap (a page which links to every other page on your site), which you can do yourself or use one of many online sitemap creation tools. Create a Google Webmasters account, add the site using the sitemap, wait a few days and hey presto! Your site is ready to be optimized! Or, save yourself the trouble and have WebsiteBuilder do it for you using.
  • Add a meta description to your website. This is what shows beneath result titles, letting viewers know what your website / business is about. Search engines treat websites with meta descriptions far better than websites without them, so it is worth spending 2 minutes and adding a short, sweet and inviting description of your site. This can be done very easily on WebsiteBuilder, for each page. Simply go Pages -> Manage Pages, then select a page you wish to write a description for, scroll down to ‘Description’, and write away!
  • Keep the content on your website relevant and ‘keyword dense’. The keywords you wish to appear high in the results for should appear in your content often, because the more it appears, the more relevant your website will appear for that keyword (within reason). A great way to incorporate more content with your keyword in is to write blog posts on your website, this is both great for visitors to read and great for SEO.

  • Don’t expect overnight success. SEO is a tough nut to crack, which is why, in some very competitive markets, some companies have dedicated SEO teams just to keep up. Chances are, you aren’t trying to break into the insurance market, so you won’t have to spend 24 hours a day writing content, but even if you do, you won’t holding that top spot of Google any time soon. There is a reason billions of dollars and thousands of man hours are spent reaching to top of Google, it is the holy grail of website building!
